The Swamp of Kalodiki: A swampy island surrounded by mountains
On the south side of the Prefecture of Thesprotia, the Swamp of Kalodiki consists, located in the wild scenery, another turning point for migratory birds. Surrounded by mountains and large reed beds, it differs from the mouth of Kalamas River. Many aquatic birds (herons, ducks, and warblers) find refuge in the reeds.
Predatory birds such as golden eagles, kites and hawks emerge from the surrounding mountains in order to hunt their prey. On its north side there is a wide area covered by water-lilies, and at the end of May when they bloom the swamp offers a unique spectacle.
How to get there
A little further from Margariti, before the intersection to Parga, and at the level of Mouri settlement, you can discover the aquatic surface of the swamp. Enjoy the view from various locations by the road, or spend some time to walk in the path which encircles the wetland.
By using binoculars you will discover, among the reeds and the rest aquatic plants, admirable aquatic birds and maybe a coypu enjoying the sun.
