Stena/ Delta of Kalamas River
An oasis for winged travelers.
The estuaries are an important station to migratory birds since they are located right above the airway of Western Greece.
The migratory stations are of equal importance to the birds as the areas of breeding and wintering. The extremely rare curlew has been observed here during its long journey from Central Africa to Siberia. Many are the herons that reach to the estuaries to spend the winter period. The number of great egrets, which spend the winter period in Kalamas, is bigger than the 1% of their population in the East Mediterranean.
